A former teacher and coach at Fred T. Foard High School will serve a prison sentence of 32 to 58 months for having sexual relations with two students.
Jeb Stuart Bass of Newton, who was 28 when arrested in May 2017, plead guilty to two counts of indecent liberties with a child and one count of performing a sex act with a student in Catawba County Superior Court Tuesday (Nov. 5th).
The first of the incidents happened from July to December 2015 with a 15-year-old student and in September 2016 with a 17-year-old student.
The 15-year-old told police Bass communicated with her via Twitter, both he & she using fake accounts.
In May 2017, Catawba County Schools administration said they received reports of inappropriate conduct between Bass and students.A search warrant was obtained requesting a search of Bass’ cell phone. That's when investigators said a second high school student told them she had sex with Bass in September 2016 when she was 17-years-old.
More than 50 people packed the courtroom Tuesday in support of Bass, who had no prior criminal record, some of them telling the Court that Bass had already been adequately punished for his crimes by losing his job and the opportunity to teach or coach.
One of the victims also spoke on behalf of Bass, saying that she did not want him to go to prison. Her mother also asked the court to be lenient, saying that Bass was a young man who made a poor decision and would suffer for it.
Bass served as an assistant boys basketball coach and assistant football coach at the high school for four years before being hired to teach social studies in 2015.
Judge Nathaniel Poovey sentenced Bass to the prison term, adding a suspended sentence of 10 to 21 months with 60 months of supervised probation when he is released from prison. He will also be required to register as a sex offender for 30 years.
