COVID-19 Update

Wayne Howard
Staff Writer

Lincoln County's number of active cases of COVID-19 increase again Friday from the Tuesday report. There were 132 active cases on Friday (Sept. 11th), up from 118 Tuesday and 76 a week ago. 15 people were awaiting results of their test for the virus; there had still been just 14 deaths and the number of people who had recovered from the disease was now reported as 1,162.

Gaston County's active case count Friday was 1,168. Another death brought the county's death toll to 68. The county also released its latest report on the percentage of positive tests: for the week of Aug. 23-29, it was 9.49%, back under 10% for the first time in three weeks. 31 Gaston County residents were hospitalized with the coronavirus, while 3,228 are said to have recovered.

After some very low new case reports the last several days, Catawba County reported 35 new cases on Friday. Another death related to the virus increased that count to 49.

Cleveland County also reported another death, bringing that county's death toll to 51. There were 150 active cases in Cleveland County on Friday.

Statewide, there were 33 more deaths reported Friday along with 1,532 new cases. Some good news on the state scene: the percentage of positive tests Wednesday (Sept. 9th) was 5.3%--almost reaching the 5% goal that has been so much talked about. The latest statistics also show that North Carolina has the lowest death rate from the disease of any Southern state except Kentucky--far less than South Carolina, Georgia and Florida.

Nationally, the number of daily deaths from the coronavirus is declining again after peaking in early August, but health experts warn that the pandemic is far from over. They expect another surge this Fall. The death toll nationally is now over 197,000 according to the World Health Organization (the CDC is confirming over 190,000 deaths from the disease). The deaths per million in the US is now estimated at 596, surpassing Italy and not far behind the UK and Spain. The WHO says the US has had one-fourth of the world's 28.6 million cases of the disease and over 20% of the deaths from it.
