Early Voting, officially called One-Stop Voting, got underway in North Carolina Thursday (Oct. 15th) and will continue thru Halloween Day (Oct. 31st), Like absentee voting by mail, the turnout was big.

Lincoln County had a total of 3,682 people vote Thursday. 1,486 of those voted at the East Lincoln Community Center. 792 voted at the Elections Office on Salem Church Road. 919 voted at the William Lentz Gym at Betty Ross Park. 505 voted at the West Lincoln Branch Library.

In Gaston County, where there are seven Early Voting locations, 6,313 people voted Thursday. Catawba County, with five One-Stop locations, had 4,439 people vote on Thursday.

If you aren't already registered to vote, you won't be able to vote on Election Day November 3rd. The deadline for registration was October 9th. But you can still register and vote at the same time during Early Voting; that's why it's called One-Stop.

During Early Voting, you can vote at any of the early voting locations in the county where you live. On Election Day, you'll have to vote at the polling place in your precinct.

In our continuing Election coverage of area candidates, today we're focusing on the NC House of Representatives race for the District 97, which is Lincoln County.

Rep. Jason Saine will be seeking his fifth elected term. He was first appointed to the post when Jonathan Rhyne moved to Gaston County in 2011. Saine beat two challengers in the GOP Primary in 2012, then ran unopposed in the General Election. He ran without an opponent in 2016. In the General Elections of 2014 & 2018 and the Republican Primary of 2018, he won with over 70% of the vote. In his current term, he served as chair of the House Appropriations Committee.

His challenger is Greg McBryde. McBryde is a retired truck driver and small business owner.

We offered both candidates a chance to address voters directly.  Here are the videos they supplied:

The NC House, NC Senate, several statewide judgeships, area judgeships, the Board of Education, County Commissioners and City Council races are all on the BACK of the ballot, so be sure to flip it over and vote both sides.

Early Voting will continue over the weekend. You can vote Saturday in Lincoln County and either Saturday or Sunday in Catawba, Gaston & Cleveland counties.

In Lincoln County, there are four locations: the East Lincoln Community Center on Optimist Club Road, the Elections Office on Salem Church Road, the gym at Betty Ross Park on S. Madison Street, and the West Lincoln Branch Library on Westwinds Road just off Shoal Road near West Lincoln Middle School. All will be open until 7:30 Friday evening and from 8 AM - 6 PM Saturday.
