Winter Storm Is Coming

Wayne Howard
Reporter

Just when we believed we had dodged the winter weather bullet and were ready to celebrate the first sunny weekend in awhile, the National Weather Service, one might say, threw more than rain on our Mardi Gras parade.

The sunny weekend is still in the forecast...BUT, NOAA issued a Winter Storm Watch for Wednesday night and Thursday, then updated that Wednesday morning to a Winter Storm Warning for Catawba County and a Winter Weather Advisory for everyone else.  However, it appears now that we will have some bad weather including sleet for parts of Lincoln County, the upper half of Cleveland, and the northern part of Gaston, especially the northwestern part near Cherryville.

We already expected rain--but now they tell us that we may have icing and possibly some mixed sleet and snow with the rain.  We actually expect some accumulation of sleet will be possible north of Lincolnton, in Catawba and upper Cleveland, and there may be some icy spots in many locations.

As of 1 AM Thursday, the official NOAA forecast calls for:

Thursday
Freezing rain before 10 am, then rain or freezing rain between 10am and noon, then rain after noon. The morning low will be near freezing.  The high Thursday will be near 35. Northeast wind 6 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Ice accumulation of less than a tenth  of an inch is possible.

Thursday night
Rain likely before 2 am, then a chance of rain or freezing rain between 2 and 4 am, then a chance of freezing rain after 4 am. Patchy fog. Otherwise, cloudy, with a low around 32. North wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Little or no additional ice accumulation expected.

Friday
A chance of sleet before 7 am, then a chance of rain between 7 am and 4 pm. Patchy fog before 8 am. Otherwise, cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly sunny, with a high near 46. Calm wind becoming north around 6 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Little or no sleet accumulation expected.

Friday night
Clear and cold with a low around 25. Northwest wind around 6 mph becoming calm after midnight.

Saturday
Sunny, with a high near 43.

Saturday night
Clear, with a low around 24.

Sunday
Sunny, with a high near 48.

Sunday night
A chance of rain and snow between 3 and 4 am, then a chance of snow after 4 am. Partly cloudy, with a low around 32. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Monday
A chance of snow before 8 am, then a chance of rain. Partly sunny, with a high near 52. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

In Hickory, it will be colder than in Lincolnton. With the morning low Thursday down to 31 there, freezing rain is expected.  It will begin between 3 and 4 am and will continue until the termperature warms to above freezing at mid-morning.
