Police have charged a man who was shot outside a car dealership in Belmont Thursday afternoon (March 11th) with eight counts of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, assault on a government official, going armed to the terror of the public and discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling.
Police say the man, identified Friday as 45-year-old Dustan Jennings Hoffman, was shot after opening fire on officers outside the Keith Hawthorne Ford dealership. Belmont Police Chief Chad Hawkins said "we attempted to get him to disarm himself, but he started firing at the officers, and other people nearby were also in danger, so officers returned fire."
The altercation was also presumed responsible for a three-vehicle wreck involving a pickup truck, a car and a van hauling a trailer. There were several bullet holes in the pickup truck and its rear window was shattered.
Police say tHoffman attempted to drive away in a vehicle after being shot, but was caught and taken to the hospital. The charges were filed on Friday.
Police did not release any information about what provoked Hoffman's skirmish with the law.
