Denver Wreck Claims Two Lives

NC Highway Patrol

A Friday afternoon (March 26th) collision on Campground Road in Denver resulted in two fatalities.  At approximately 1:10 PM, the  Highway Patrol responded to the collision on Campground Road near Pine Ridge Drive.  A 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche was traveling west (toward NC 16 business) on Campground Road, crossed the centerline, and collided head-on with an eastbound 2002 GMC Yukon.

The driver of the Chevrolet, Alexander Melton Hickman, 28, of Denver, was transported by medical helicopter to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte with life-threatening injuries.  The driver of the GMC, Boyce Louis Moore, 73, of Charlotte, succumbed to his injuries at the scene.  A passenger in the GMC, Michael Dean Spillars, 74, of Charlotte, was also pronounced dead at the scene.

The Highway Patrol says the  initial investigation indicates reckless driving on the part of the driver of the Chevrolet was a contributing circumstance.  Traffic was detoured as the roadway was closed for over two hours.
