LCSO Land Search & Drone Teams Find Missing Man

Lincoln County Sheriff's
Office Press Release

LINCOLNTON, N.C. – An elderly man who apparently walked away from his home on Saturday night (May 21, 2022) was located Sunday night in a wooded area nearby on Mary Ester Modlin Trail in Iron Station, N.C.

On Sunday (May 22, 2022) relatives told Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputies that the 80-year-old man with dementia was last seen around 7 p.m. on May 21, 2022 at the residence. The man told officers that he went to bed Saturday night but did not check on his father. Sunday morning, he got up and left to pick up some food. When he returned home he discovered that his father was missing.

A brief search of the wood line by the son did not locate the man and he contacted 911. The Lincoln County Communications Center sent out a reverse 911 to the local area along with a 50-mile radius attempt to locate to area law enforcement. The Land Search team and the LCSO Drone team were dispatched to the scene. Deputies searched the nearby buildings, roads and homes without success but did locate clues on a direction of travel. The Land Search team searched the heavily wooded area and located the man around 9:15 p.m. on Sunday night. He was carried out to a waiting Lincoln County EMS unit and transported to Atrium Health – Lincoln for evaluation and treatment.

Members of the Land Search team, the LCSO Drone team and Incident Management team are made up of representatives from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Denver and South Fork Fire Departments, Lincoln County Emergency Management and Lincoln County Fire Marshal’s Office.
