GASTONIA - It’s been a big year for Gaston Together.

That’s the word this week from executive director Donna Lockett. Amongst a host of other activities for the local community group, Gaston Together’s health care commission recently held its annual meeting (see related coverage, also here in The Herald).

Lockett said the “Celebrating Wellness with Healthy Gaston” event was sponsored by Gaston Family Health Services. It focused on the Healthy Gaston initiative, which helps businesses, churches and schools as they go through the process of creating a “culture of wellness” for their employees.

3 - City of Lincolnton - Recycle Friday

Lockett welcomed the event’s attendees. Participants engaged in several mini-workshops that included chair yoga provided by the Gaston YMCA; line dancing led by Sharmilla Anderson of Gaston Family Health Services; and an adult field day led by Hydeia Hayes from the City of Bessemer City. A presentation of cooking with herbs was given by David Fogarty of the North Carolina Co-operative Extension, along with a gift of fresh herbs and a cookbook provided by the Extension and the Master Gardeners of Gaston County.

Recognition was given to organizations and individuals to celebrate their success in health and wellness. Achievement honors for Healthy Gaston were given at the gold level to Gaston College, the City of Bessemer City, GSM Services and Parkdale, Inc. Partners Behavioral Health Management was re-certified at the gold level. And recognized at the Silver Level was Pharr Yarns. Bronze-level honorees were Alliance Bank and Trust, the City of Cherryville, the Gaston Literacy Council and the United Way of Gaston County.

The Healthy Gaston Challenge winners were presented with trophies for their efforts in three areas: the participation in the Gaston Run Race Series, a healthy activity photographic completion and volunteering in the Healthy Gaston plot at the Rotary Community Garden. Healthy Gaston Challenge winners were divided by the number of employees: the micro division, the Gaston Regional Chamber of Commerce; the small division, Lanxess; the medium division, Parkdale’s corporate office; and the large division, Gaston Family Health Services.
