Officers Save Teen Who Threatened To Jump From Bridge

Lincoln County Sheriff's
Office Press Release

LINCOLNTON, N.C. – On December 6, 2018 Sheriff’s Deputy C. Palin was on routine patrol on Highway 73 when he noticed a teenage girl walking on the bridge on Ingleside Farm Road over NC Highway 73.

Deputy Palin got out of his vehicle to approach the subject but the girl walked toward the railing, put both her feet over the railing and stood on the edge. The officer stopped where he was at that point and began talking to the girl. He was able to get the girl’s name and that she was 17 years old but would turn 18 on December 7, 2018. He also notified Lincoln County Communications that other units were needed to block traffic and assist with talking the teen off the bridge.

The officer continued to talk to the teenage girl to keep her focused on him instead of the ledge. He was able to learn that the girl had some personal issues and had been struggling lately. She was also not taking her prescription medications. Another concern was a speeding ticket she had received recently because she was afraid she would lose her license and job.

Deputy Palin continued to talk to the teen until State Highway Patrol Trooper Black and Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office Detective M. Lookadoo arrived to assist. Trooper Black continued talking to the girl and was able to get her off the ledge and into the roadway. She moved to the middle of the bridge and then over to where the officers were located.

She was checked by Lincoln County EMS then transported to Gaston Crisis mental health center for further evaluation.
