Two news stories we are still working on are a fatal fire Thanksgiving morning and a holdup in Denver.  The fire happened shortly after 3 AM on Water Oaks Drive off NC16-business just over one-and-a-half miles north of NC73. The holdup happened about three hours later at the Citgo in 'downtown' Denver (near Stacy's).

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to worsen with record numbers of new cases nationally on Thursday and then Friday--over 190,000.  More people are also hospitalized with the virus than at any time yet.  With two vaccines nearing approval, Drs. Anthony Fauci & Deborah Birx emphasized that now is not the time to back away from wearing masks and other measures to slow the spread of the disease.

Zeta was a quick-moving storm, and while it did considerable damage in some locations, the effect most felt was power outages.  By Saturday morning, power had been restored to many, but there were still outages, and while most roads had been cleared, one street in Lincolnton was still closed because of a downed utility pole.

Mail-in Ballots Pouring In
Those mail-in absentee ballots are pouring in at area Elections offices.  Lincoln County had 6981 requested as of Monday (Oct. 5th).  Of the ones they had sent out, 2559 had already been returned.  Other area counties are experiencing similar larger than normal absentee voting.
