West Lincoln High School junior Canon Bridges is the First Federal Savings Bank Lincoln County High School Player of the Week. The award is given on Tuesdays based on coaches' recommendations for performances in the previous week's game. Tim Johnson and Ken Link, who do the play-by-play on WLON Radio join Demery Brewer of First Federal in presenting the award at a practice session of the team whose member is chosen.

Bridges was outstanding on defense in the Rebels win over East Lincoln last Friday. He had five solo tackles, one of them a sack of the East Lincoln quarterback. He also recovered a fumble and scored two points on a point after touchdown conversion.

This week, West Lincoln finishes out its regular season at Lake Norman Charter. The Rebels will then enter the NCHSAA 2A playoffs. The other teams in the South Fork Conference were all classified 2AA for the playoffs.

The game of the week is no doubt the Bandys at North Lincoln contest. Both teams are undefeated in conference play. North Lincoln is 8-2 overall, having lost a close game to undefeated Thomas Jefferson Academy in the first game of the season and to 3A powerhouse Alexander Central. Bandys only loss of the season was a 28-27 defeat at Hickory.

The game will be broadcast on WLON Radio (1050AM, 107.5FM), on WNNC Radio (1230AM, 101.3FM) and also available on the internet via, and

East Lincoln will host Newton-Conover in the Mustangs final regular season game. Both East Lincoln and Newton-Conover have 4-6 records, 2-4 in the South Fork Conference. A win might get either team into the NCHSAA playoffs, but a loss will certainly mean the end of the season for the loser.

Lincolnton won't be in the playoffs this year. The Wolves, now 2-8 overall, 1-5 in the conference, will finish out their season at Maiden. The 7-3 overall, 3-3 in the conference, Blue Devils will almost certainly be included in the playoffs.

Cherryville will play Bessemer City for the second time this season. The Ironmen beat the Yellow Jackets 17-14 in the first game of the year, but that one didn't count in the Southern Piedmont 1A Conference standings; this one does. Both teams have 6-4 records, but while the Ironmen are 3-3 in the conference, Bessemer City is 5-1. The game will be played at Rudisill Stadium in Cherryville.

Gaston County's game of the week has to be Hunter Huss at Ashbrook. The Huskies enter the game undefeated with a 10-0 record while the Green Wave is 5-5. Huss needs a win in this one to maintain its claim to sole possession of the Big South 3A Conference title. Crest and Kings Mountain play at Kings Mountain Friday night. Both of them are 8-2, both have 5-1 conference records compared to the Huskies' 6-0. Whatever happens, all three of those teams will no doubt be included in the NCHSAA playoffs.

The Thomas Jefferson Academy Gryphons will try to complete an undefeated regular season when they host Union Academy Friday night.

The Fred T. Foard Tigers will play at West Irdell on Friday. After losing their first four games of the season, the Tigers have lost only once since--to undefeated Hibriten. They are tied for second place in the Northwestern Foothills 2A Conference with Patton, a team they beat when the two played in September. Patton hosts Hibriten this Friday, so a win for the Tigers would likely give them sole possession of second place in the conference, and they'll no doubt be in the playoffs next week.

North Gaston finishes its season at home against Burns. Both teams have had disappointing seasons. East Gaston is still looking for its first win; the Warriors host East Rutherford on Friday.

The biggest game of the week in Cleveland County is the South Point at Shelby matchup. The Golden Lions, 7-3 overall, and the Red Raiders, 8-2, are both 4-0 in the Southwestern 2A Conference.

St. Stephens at Hickory is the big game this week in Catawba County. The Indians are 3-7 and the Red Tornadoes 5-4 going into this final game of the season.

Stuart Cramer plays Forestview in another Gaston County contest.
