Football Playoff Brackets Announced

Wayne Howard
Staff Writer

Information we had obtained earlier indicated that West Lincoln would be in the 2A NCHSAA playoffs, but when the pairings were announced on Saturday, the Rebels were classified 2AA and will have to play at Shelby next Friday night.

The Rebels are seeded #13; the Golden Lions, #4 in the west. West Lincoln won its 9th game against just two losses in the last game of the season, but they'll face a Shelby team that is a perennial favorite. The Lions won the Southwestern 2A Conference title and finished with an 8-3 regular season mark.

North Lincoln got seeded #8 in the 2AA brackets and will host #9 Smoky Mountain next Friday. Both teams had 8-3 regular season records. The Knights finished second in the South Fork 2A Conference title, their only loss in the league to Bandys, while the Mustangs had a 3-2 conference record and finished #2 in their Mountain 6 2A Conference.

The East Lincoln Mustangs made the playoffs--but as a #16 seed. They'll play #1 seed Pisgah (10-1), winner of the Mountain 6 league title, in Canton next Friday.

Despite going undefeated, Hibriten, the Northwestern Foothills 2A Conference champ, was seeded #2.

The Bandys Trojans were seeded #3 in the west in the 2AA playoffs. They'll host #14 seed Franklin (6-5) next Friday. Bandys lost only once during the regular season--by a 28-27 score at Hickory.

Fred T. Foard, which lost its first four games but finished with a 6-5 record and second place in the Northwestern Foothills 2A Conference, will enter the playoffs at #6 seed West Stokes next Friday.

The South Point Red Raiders, who finished the regular season 8-3 and in second place in the Southwestern 2A league, will play at #7 Mt. Pleasant next Friday. The Tigers only managed a 6-5 record, but they were 4-0 in the Rocky River 2A Conference and league champs.

It wasn't the West Lincoln Rebels but the Maiden Blue Devils who got classified 2A for the playoffs. Seeded #10 in the west, Maiden will play at #7 seed East Rutherford next Friday.

For the Cherryville Ironmen, it's the first time in a long time, but they're in the NCHSAA 1AA playoffs. The 7-4 Ironmen, seeded #7 in the west, will open playoff activity next Friday at home against 10th seeded Community School of Davidson (6-5). The Spartans beat the Ironmen 42-36 in a see-saw game at Rudisill Stadium when the two met in late September.

Bessemer City was seeded higher than Cherryville, even though the Ironmen beat the Yellow Jackets twice during the regular season. Bessemer City, seeded #5, will host #12 seed Highland Tech in the first round next Friday.

Undefeated Thomas Jefferson Academy, winner of the Southern Piedmont 1A Conference championship, is the #1 seed in the west in the NCHSAA 1A playoffs. They'll get a bye in the first round and will play their first playoff game at home on November 23rd.

Kings Mountain, Crest, and Burns all made the 3A playoff list as did Hunter Huss and Stuart Cramer. The Mountaineers, the #5 seed in the west, will host West Rowan next Friday. The Crest Chargers, seeded #7, will host #10 seed Stuart Cramer. Some will be surprised that Hunter Huss, which finished unbeaten, didn't get a #1 seed. The #2 seeded Huskies will host the Burns Bulldogs, the #15 seed, next Friday. The #1 seed in the west went to the Northwest Cabarrus Trojans, who are also unbeaten.

Gastonia Ashbrook made the 3AA playoffs, but only as a #16 seed. The Green Wave will travel to Boone next Friday to play the undefeated Watauga Pioneers.
