Did you know?
Did you know that wrestling is one of the oldest of sports?
Yep, there are references to it in Homer’s Iliad. And even further back, wrestling is depicted in 15,000-year-old cave drawings found in France. Early Egyptian and Babylonian reliefs show wrestling moves that are still used to this day.
The sport was always popular in ancient Greece. Wrestling held a special place of prominence in the early Olympic Games. It was developed by ancient Greeks as a way to train soldiers in hand-to-hand combat. After defeating the Greeks, the Roman Empire borrowed from Greek wrestling but eliminated much of the brutality. The Greeks feared the true history of the sport would be lost, and so Greco-Roman wrestling was born.
Talking of the Olympics, for the past 14 years, the modern Olympic Games have allowed women’s wrestling. Thirty-one years ago, Norway hosted the first world championship for women’s wrestling.
America’s national governing body of amateur wrestling is USA Wrestling. The organization has led the sport in this country since 1983.
