Superhero Run, Saturday, May 11 --- Catawba County Senior Nutrition Services is holding its inaugural Superhero Run on May 11 at Conover Park. Proceeds from this event will help support Meals on Wheels and Seniors Morning Out programs. A Fun Run for children starts at 8:30 a.m. and the 5k begins at 9 a.m., so it will be fun for the entire family. You can walk or run, just come out and have fun supporting a great cause. Each registered participant will receive a voucher for free food to use post-race at our food trucks! Late registration is May 1 through May 7. Even if you cannot be with us on Race Day, support Meals on Wheels and receive a Superhero T-Shirt by registering as a Phantom Runner! VW Cruise-In, Saturday, May 11, June 8, July 13, August 10, September 14, October 12 --- A Volkswagen (VW) Cruise-In will be held the second Saturday of each month from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. beginning in May and running through October. The event will be held in the parking lot of Caputos Pizza Company, 800 S. Mountain St., Cherryville, NC 28021.
Coach Bobby Lutz: From Bandy’s To The National Stage, Monday, May 13 --- Bobby Lutz grew up on Highway 150, graduated from Bandy’s High School and went on to coach basketball at UNC-Charlotte, North Carolina State, Iowa State and Pfeiffer. He will talk about his life and career and how basketball has changed over the years for the Eastern Lincoln Historical Society on Monday, May 13 at 6 p.m. He was just named a Special Assistant Coach at Nebraska. Come see him before he leaves! The meeting will be held at the Mundy House Annex, 4353 Business Highway 16 North in Denver. All meetings are free to the public.
Lifeguard Training Class, May 13 – June 5 --- The Lincolnton Parks and Recreation Department will offer a Lifeguard Training Class from May 13 through June 5 (12-class course). The cost for the course is $150 (includes training, books, supplemental materials, CPR pocket mask, certification cards, use of equipment). The class will be held at the W.M. Lentz Recreation Center at Betty Ross Park, 800 S. Madison St., Lincolnton, NC 28092 where registration will be accepted in person, or online at http://www.ci.lincolnton.nc.us/500/lifeguardtraining. Hickory Police Special Olympics Golf Tournament, Monday, May 13 --- Hickory Police Department is continuing their efforts to support Special Olympics North Carolina through fundraising and by bringing awareness to the organization’s goals of providing year-round sports training and athletic opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities through social inclusion. HPD will host the 22nd Annual Golf Tournament to benefit Special Olympics on May 13 at the Lake Hickory Country Club – Catawba Springs Course. This event helps to raise the much-needed funding for the many programs offered by Special Olympics North Carolina in Catawba County such as basketball, bowling, equestrian, flag football, softball, soccer, swimming and tennis. WLMS Sports Physicals, Tuesday, May 21 --- Students must have a physical prior to participating in tryouts or workouts for any sport for the 2019-2020 school year. Unfortunately, many times it is hard to get a last minute appointment to get a sports physical. To ensure that students are prepared ahead of time, we are offering sports physicals for the students at West Lincoln Middle School. Family Medicine Associates of Lincoln County will be providing sports physicals on Tuesday, May 21. The cost is $10 and checks should be made payable to WLMS. Your son/daughter received a blank physical form. If you would like for your student to participate, please fill out the front page, sign the bottom, and return the form with your payment by Monday, May 20. Physicals will begin around 1:15 p.m. and will be finished before school dismissal. If you have any questions, please contact the school at 704-276-1760. REMINDER: This is an opportunity to get a physical that will last the entire 2019-2020 school year. Physicals are good for 395 days from the date received.
LCC Night Golf Tournament, Friday, May 24 --- Lincoln Country Club, 2052 Country Club Road, Lincolnton, NC 28092 will host a Night Golf Tournament on Friday, May 24 (Deadline to register is May 23). Entry Fee is $45 per player (members) and $60 per player (guests) – Teams must have at least one LCC member. Fee includes cart fee, night golf supplies, dinner, and awards. Format is 18-hole captains choice with dinner in between nines. Starting time is 5:30 p.m. for the first nine and approximately 8:45 p.m. for the second nine. Bring your own team or sign up as individual and we will pair you with a team.
Lions Prowl Freedom Ride, Saturday, May 26 --- Calling all motorcyclists! The 5th Annual Lions Prowl Freedom Ride/Motorcycle Poker Run will be held Saturday, May 26. Registration will be held at the Blue Ridge Harley-Davidson Motorcycle dealership, 2002 13th Avenue Drive, SE in Hickory, NC and at Honda of North Carolina, 4625 Hickory Blvd., Granite Falls, NC. Registration fee is $20 driver (motorcyclist) and $10 rider (passenger). Registration will be at 9 a.m. and first bike out at 10 a.m. The event is hosted by the Long View Lions Club with proceeds going to help the blind/visually impaired.
East Lincoln Summer Baseball Camp, June 17-20 --- A Baseball Camp, hosted by the East Lincoln Mustangs, will be held June 17-20. The camp will be divided into four age groups, 6-7, 8-9, 10-12, 13 and up. The camps goals under the direction of head baseball coach Chris Matile are to help all campers learn the fundamentals of the game and improve their overall playing abilities while most importantly, having fun. In addition to Coach Matile, campers will be instructed by assistant coaches and current Mustang players. All participants should wear baseball pants, a t-shirt and a hat, and should bring their glove, a water bottle, sunscreen and tennis shoes (for inclement weather). Catchers need to bring their own gear. Campers should also bring a snack. The camp will take place at the East Lincoln High School baseball field, and the cost is $90. The camp will run each day from 9 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. For more information, contact Chris Matile at East Lincoln High School.
