The baseball, softball and girls soccer playoffs continue this Tuesday. West Lincoln will host Smoky Mtn. in a 5:30 PM game. The Mustangs (13-9) finished third in their conference. West beat the conference champs, Franklin, 7-4 on Friday.
North Lincoln will play at home Tuesday evening at 7 PM against West Stokes. The Wildcats (16-10) beat Maiden 9-6 on Friday. They also finished third in their conference (Western Piedmont). Maiden had beaten the conference champs, Forbush, last Tuesday before the loss to West Stokes on Friday.
In the girls soccer playoffs, Fred T. Foard, after beating East Lincoln 3-0 on Friday, will travel to Belmont to meet South Point. The Tigers are 19-2-1 on the season. They won the Northwestern Foothills Conference title. The Red Raiders are 14-1. They won the Southwestern Conference championship.
Some teams one might have expected will still be playing won't. Both Cherryville and Lincoln Charter's baseball teams lost on Friday night (May 10th). Cherryville came from a 3-0 deficit to cut the lead to 3-2 and had two players on base in the bottom of the seventh before falling 3-2 to Mt. Airy. Lincoln Charter lost to Queen's Grant from Matthews in 11 innings, 4-3.
The North Lincoln softball team saw its season come to an end with a 1-0 loss to Draughn; but perhaps the biggest surprise was the loss by Mtn. Island Charter. Their softball team had won 22 games. They won the regular season championship in the PAC7 1A Conference when they beat Pine Lake Prep 4-3 on April 25th. They they scored 13 runs in the conference tournament against a PLP team that hadn't allowed more than eight in any other game all season for a 13-6 victory.
Friday just wasn't their day.
Sophomore Chloe Hatzapoulos knocked a home run. Freshman Kaylan Brown had two hits in four plate appearances, one of them a double, and drove in three runs. Junior pitcher Lauren Engel faced 39 batters and allowed just seven hits--none of them more than a single--while striking out three. The Raptors took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but Starmount scored 3 each in the top of the third and fifth. Mtn. Island Charter cut the lead to 6-4 in the bottom of the 5th and tied the game in the seventh, but fell in the extra inning by a 7-6 score.
Many times teams who lose, especially when they expected to win, say "wait until next year." For the Raptors, it seems quite appropriate. Not one of their players was a senior this year; and while the season may have ended in disappointment, it was still a very good year.
