North Lincoln outlasted Croatan to win school’s first team title at the NCHSAA 2A Track & Field Championships at North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro. The team combined to outscore second-place Croatan 76.5 to 57 in the meet. It was the first state title for the Knights in the event.
North Lincoln runners won both of the individual long-distance races in the meet, claiming the 1600 & 3200 meter runs. Jason Thomson earned first in the 1600-meter run, crossing in a time of 4:22.07 to claim the top spot. His teammate Brian Risse was the first to finish in the 3200-meter, climbing to the top of the podium in 9:30.59. In that event, Lincolnton's Daniel Hopkins finished third and Mile Phillips from North finished 6th.
North Lincoln’s Jake Soorus won both of the throwing events in field competition. Soorus tossed the shot 56’ 6.5” to win first place in the shot put and threw 175’ 11” to earn first in the discus throw.
Jalen Ward finished fourth in the 400-meter dash; Xander Pendergrass from West Lincoln placed eighth. Johnny Grant, Jason Thomson and Jason Risse finished 4th, 5th and 6th in the 800-meter run. Alex Reavis from Bandys won the boys high jump; Soorus placed seventh in the long jump. East Lincoln's Kobe Thomas was fourth in the triple jump.
Landon Beard of North Lincoln was a co-winner of the Sportsmanship Award at the meet.
In the girls' competition, Lincolnton's Emily Shain won the shot put and finished fourth in the discus throw. She tossed the shot 43' 11.5". Taryn Giles-Robinette of East Lincoln won third place in the discus throw. Angie Allen of North Lincoln won the 1600-meter run, running the distance in five minutes 10.87 seconds; Michaela Gammon of East Lincoln finished third in that event; and Alyssa Galvin of North finished sixth. Allen finished second in the 3200-meter run; Gammon finished third and Galvin fifth. Lauren Taylor of East Lincoln finished sixth in the high jump, North Lincoln's Olivia Correa placed fifth in the long jump and sixth in the triple jump. Ania Mayner of North Lincoln finished sixth in the 400-meter dash, Michaela Gammon of East Lincoln was 4th in the 800-meter run.
The 1A Track Championship had been postponed from the previous week and was held on Saturday (May 18th), also at NC A&T.
In the boys 400-meter dash, Lincoln Charter's Darrian Bonilla placed 8th. The team of Drew Zink, Jonas Guffey, Curtis Herms & Jordan Hudson finished second in the boys 800-meter relay.
Ja'Ciya Guthrie frm Bessemer City won the girls 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash, & 100-meter hurdles.
Leela Talavera from Lincoln Charter placed 12th in the shot put.
