LINCOLNTON - The Lincolnton Wolves traveled to Newton-Conover to compete in the first round of conference tournament play.

The Red Devils had defeated the Wolves two times during regular season (76-59 at home and then on the road 58-56 in an overtime buzzer beater). Monday night’s game turned out to be another intense matching. The Red Devils entered the game with a 9-5 conference record and the Wolves entered with a 6-8 conference record.

Coach John Cloninger III told the Wolves that it's difficult for any team to beat an opponent three times encouraging the team to fight for every point. He stated, "this is a great group of guys who are growing as a team and we were expecting a close game. I think the fans played an important role in motivating the team. Their support and enthusiasm definitely helped us pick up our momentum." Cloninger also thanked all of the coaches.

The game started off almost point for point, then the Wolves capitalized on some turn overs and took the lead 23-17 to end the 1st quarter. The Red Devils would answer, scoring 12-points in the 2nd quarter to Lincolnton's 5 giving them a 1-point lead at half time. It continued to be a battle for the lead, turn-over's, fouls, bloody elbow, you name it, this game had it. The Red Devils put up 27 points and the Wolves answered with 33 points the 2nd half giving them the 61-56 victory.

Lincolnton will play Lake Norman Charter Wednesday evening at 7:30 at CVCC. The winner will play the winner of the East Lincoln vs North Lincoln Thursday game in the championship game Friday night at 7:30 at CVCC.
