LINCOLNTON - In track the most celebrated event in all of track is the 100-meter dash. That is the title that goes to the fastest male and female. In Indoor track its equivalent is the 55-meter dash.

At the indoor JDL AA State Track Championship meet in Greensboro this past weekend Kayla Smith of Lincolnton had the race of her life. In the 55-meter dash going into the race she was seeded in the number three position with a time of 7.18 seconds. She won her heat with a PR (Personal Record) time of 7:16. This was also good enough to move her up to the 1st place seed and tie for the fastest time this year in the state in AA. She was not finished!

She knew it would take the race of her life to win it. With an outstanding start and race she crossed the finish line in a time 7.03, two steps ahead of the closest competition and a new PR of over .13 seconds. This was a new AA State Indoor Track Record and crowned her the AA Fastest Female and seeded her 2nd in all divisions in the state.

Kayla quoted “I had had the best few months of training ever with my trainer and coaches and I knew that I was going to have a good race but I never dreamed my time will drop this much.”

Coach Morrison and Coach Byrd said “this is the tip of the iceberg of what she is capable of achieving. She has worked extremely hard and we saw a great amount of focus and determination as she peaked at the right time.”

Kayla is now gearing up for outdoor and will be running at Eastern Kentucky on scholarship.
