Eagles Flying High

Lincoln Charter will host Chatham Central Tuesday evening at 7:00 in the NCHSAA 1A Basketball playoffs.

A win will put them in the western region championship game on Saturday. A win there would put them in the state championship game the following Saturday (March 14th).

Saturday (Feb. 29th) they beat Community School of Davidson 81-50. The Eagles gave up a basket to Community School of Davidson to start the game, but then Sam Cogan hit a pair of free throws to tie the score and Troy Fulton hit a three-point shot to give Lincoln Charter the lead and they never trailed again. The Eagles led by six at the end of the first period and 41-18 at the half en route to their 27th win of the season.

It's entirely possible that two teams from this area could be in the western region championship on Saturday. Mountain Island Charter beat Starmount 80-63, so the Raptors move on to the regional semifinal round, where they will play at Winston-Salem Prep on Tuesday.

In 2A play, Newton-Conover's girls advanced to the western semifinals with a 70-68 win over Shelby. Chyna Cornwell had 30 points in the win; Grace Loftin added 17. Shelby was led by freshman Maraja Pass with 24; sophomore Kate Hollifield had 23. The Red Devils play at East Burke on Tuesday night.

The Shelby boys team won their game Saturday, downing North Davidson 80-60 to advance to the 2A western semifinals. They'll play at West Stokes Tuesday.
