Butch Parker, Conference Administrator
South Fork 2A Athletic Conference

At the final South Fork Conference meeting of the 2019-2020 school year, the SF2A is proud to release the following information that will impact both graduating seniors of spring sports, and rising underclass members for next year.

The Conference is proud to Bestow the 2019-2020 South Fork Courage Award, to all Senior Members of the 2020 Springs Sports Teams, of the South Fork 2A Athletic Conference at each of the eight member schools {Bandys, East Lincoln, Lake Norman Charter, Lincolnton, Maiden, Newton-Conover, North Lincoln, West Lincoln}. This includes Baseball, Women’s Golf, Softball, Women’s Soccer, Men’s Tennis, and Track & Field. A plaque will be presented to each school to display, listing the names of the Seniors.

With the circumstances that the Covid-19 Pandemic placed those Student-Athletes in, they have shown exemplary courage and dedication, as they continued working out and practicing on their own, for the possible return to action. Unfortunately, their season was canceled, due to no fault of their own, denying them a conclusion of their High School Athletic career. The South Fork Conference is proud of all these young men and women for being a vibrant member of athletic teams for the past four years. In this way, we would like to honor those athletes, with this, the Courage Award for 2020.

The Conference also elected instead of waiting until the end of the 4th year of Conference Realignment, to split the conference proceeds to the member schools, Athletics’ General Fund. The AD’s of all eight schools, unanimously elected to give $4,000 to each school, out of our treasury, to help with the losses incurred due to the pandemic. Again, this is normally done at the end of our 4th year.

This is made possible in part, by our Corporate Sponsor, Lake Electric, of Maiden. Special thanks to Mr. Bynum Caldwell for his generosity and support of High School Athletics in our conference. This money will help each program continue to provide the safest and best equipment, for our Student Athletes.

In conclusion, the Conference recognized the contributions of Coach Cole Sigmon, AD at Lincolnton High, for his years of service to Lincolnton, and the South Fork Athletic Conference. Coach Sigmon, has retired and attended his last meeting on Wednesday. Also, a tribute to Matt Schlegel of Lake Norman Charter High School, who served as President, for the past year. Coach Schlegel will remain as a valuable asset to the South Fork Conference.

The Transition of the Host School and President of the Conference for 2020-2021 was completed, as Newton-Conover High School, and AD John Echerd, took over those post.
