LINCOLNTON, N.C. - Lincolnton senior shortstop and pitcher E.J. Manjarres has been awarded the 2020 Jonathan Brookins Memorial Scholarship, named for the former Lincolnton baseball player, the committee announced Tuesday.

The $2,500 award honors the memory of Brookins, a pitcher and first baseman on the Wolves’ 1995 state championship team. He was an all-state player as a senior in 1997 and helped lead Cherryville Post 100 to an American Legion baseball state title later that summer. Brookins is also a member of the Lincoln County Sports Hall of Fame.

Manjarres graduated Lincolnton with a 4.2 GPA and was a member of the Beta Club, National Honor Society and National Technical Honor Society. Outside the classroom, Manjarres played baseball for four years and was named JV MVP in 2017 and Varsity MVP in 2019. He played football for four years and was varsity quarterback as a junior and senior.

The scholarship is awarded to a senior baseball player who embodies athletic and academic performance as well as strong character and active community service – the same qualities that Brookins exhibited.

Manjarres is the 21st recipient of the award, which has paid out over $115, 000 to deserving baseball players.

Brookins played baseball at Western Carolina as a freshman before he lost his life in a tragic car accident in November of 1998. In his memory a golf tournament sponsored by Rhyne Financial to fund the scholarship was created in 1999 with the support of the Brookins family. The baseball field at Lincolnton High School is also named for Brookins.
