North Lincoln Wins Track Championships

The NCHSAA 2A State Track & Field Championships  belong to North Lincoln.
The North boys edged Lake Norman Charter 66-60 and the Knights girls beat Cummings 69-64.  

Angie Allen won three individual events for the Knights.  She won the 800 meter run with a time of 2:15.58. She won the 1600 meter run again this year as she did in 2019 (because of COVID, no state meet was held last year) posting a time of 5:05.97, to best Katherine Hopkins from Lincolnton. Karina Coulter from Fred T. Foard finished third. Allen also won the 3200 meter run, crossing the finish line in 11:13.81, just under four seconds faster than Patton’s Madison Clay who finished in 11:17.70.

Allen was only outdone by Cummings’ Kendall Jordan who won all four events in which she participated: the long jump, triple jump,  the 100 meter hurdles and 300 meter hurdles. Jordan was selected as the 2A girls Most Outstanding Performer.

Anaia Mayner of North Lincoln finished second in the girls 400 meter dash. Chloe Soorus from North Lincoln was second in the pole vault.  Abigall Lamoutte of North was fourth.  East Lincoln's Taryn Giles-Robinette took third place in the discus throw. Carly Correll of North was fourth.

Lincolnton's Hopkins was third in the 3200 meter run.  Lori Glavan of North finished fourth.  Kayli Page of North was 6th in the girls 100 meter hurdles.  Maiden's Callie Stamey was 7th in the 300 meter hurdles.  

The Knights also won the boys championship despite a stellar performance by Lake Norman Charter's Blaise Atkinson, who raced to four individual wins, including both of  the two shortest sprints and both hurdle events. Atkinson posted a time of 10.98 seconds in the 100 meter dash, 22.15 seconds in the 200 meters. He cleared the line in 14.34 seconds in the 110 meter hurdles and 38.94 seconds in the 300 meter hurdles. Atkinson was named the 2A boys Most Outstanding Performer.

North Lincoln had two individual event champions. Ty Castro won the shot put with a toss of 54’ 4.5” while teammate Jacob Scott rolled to a 9:41.16 victory in the 3200 meter run. Castro finished second in the discus throw and Austin Cline from Bandys third.

Grant Howlett also collected a pair of individual event wins for Lake Norman Charter. He won the 800 meter run and the 1600 meter run. Miles Phillips from North Lincoln finished second in both those events.  Stephen Fernetti finished fourth in the 1600.
North Lincoln's Liam Sutton was fourth in the 300 meter hurdles.

The NCHSAA NC Farm Bureau sportsmanship awards  to honor two athletes at each NCHSAA State Championship event who have demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship throughout the season with the NC Farm Bureau Sportsmanship Awards. The 2021 2A Women’s Track & Field Sportsmanship Award Winners were Abby Lamoutte from North Lincoln and Tamesia Pinnix from Cummings. The 2A Men’s winners were Cole Wesson and Grant Howlett.
