Sunday night's third and final game in the American Legion baseball playoff series between Cherryville Post 100 and the Lincoln County Cardinals ended when
Noah Ingle stroked a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the sixth inning invoking the mercy rule and a final 12-2 score.
With the win, Post 100 now advances to the semifinals against the winner of the Mint Hill-Burke County series. No matter which team wins, Cherryville's next game will be Wednesday.
If Mint Hill wins the series – they currently hold a 2-1 series lead – the semifinals would open Wednesday at 7 pm at Charlotte’s Independence High School. If Burke County wins, Cherryville would host Wednesday’s opener.
Post 100 pounded out 13 hits Sunday evening at Fraley Field, scoring seven in the first two innings en route to a 3-0 series sweep. Cherryville pitchers allowed just two hits while striking out eight.
Samuel Duncan (two hits, one RBI), Zane Brockman (two hits, three RBIs), Cole Irby (two hits, one RBI) and Joseph Webb (two hits, two RBIs) led the way. For the Cardinals, Gavin Jiminez had a two-run homer to account for all their runs.
The Cherryville Legion Juniors begin their playoff series Monday evening (July 12th) at Fraley Field.
