Cherryville Post 100 won the opening game in its 2 of 3 series for the American Legion Baseball Area IV championship Thursday night at Fraley Field. Originally scheduled for Wednesday night, the game was postponed because of the death of a family member of one of the Rutherford County players.
Post 100 never trailed, staking out a 1-0 lead and adding two more runs in the second inning before going on a scoring spree and posting 12 more in the third. The game ended in five because of the big lead. The Post 100 senior team will play again Friday night at Fraley Field in Cherryville and the third game (if needed) will be Saturday.
The North Carolina state tournament will be played in Cherryville beginning Tuesday (July 27th) through next Saturday (August 1st).
The Mid-Atlantic Regional will be in Asheboro the following week, and the American Legion World Series will be played in Shelby August 12th-17th.
The Cherryville junior team lost its game to High Point-Thomasville Post 41 11-9. That state tournament is a pool play event, so they will play again at 4 PM Friday and 1 PM Saturday.
