The Cherryville Post 100 junior team won the state junior champioship in American Legion baseball Monday (July 26th) with an 11-4 victory over Matthews Post 435.
Cherryville took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning, but Matthews tied the score in the bottom of that inning. After Post 100 scored a run in the top of the 4th, Post 435 took the lead with two in the bottom. The sixth inning saw an explosion of scoring for Cherryville, although much of it was due to defensive problems for their opponents. Two runs were walked in, two scored when batters were hit by pitches; three Post 100 batters in all got hit by pitches and Matthews committed three errors. Cherryville sent 14 players to the plate in the inning, scoring 8 runs for a 10-3 lead. In the top of the seventh, they scored another to make the score 11-3. Matthews scored one run in the bottom of the 7th to make the final 11-4.
The Post 100 senior team will try to win a state title as they host the senior state championship beginning Wednesday. Post 100 will play in the last of four games that day at 7 PM against Wayne County Post 11. On Thursday, Cherryville will play at 4 PM against Rowan County Post 342. On Friday, Post 100 will play Port City Post 545 at 4 PM.
The semi-finals of the pool play tournament will be Saturday, with games at 4 & 7. The state championship game will be Sunday afternoon (August 2nd).
The Regional Tournament will be played in Asheboro August 3rd-8th, and the American Legion World Series will be played August 12th through 17th at Keeter Stadium in Shelby.
