The Cherryville American Legion baseball teams have developed a reputation of late for explosive rallies.  The juniors, in winning the state junior championship Monday, scored eight runs in the sixth inning of their game with Matthews to turn a close contest into an 11-4 victory.

The senior team scored seven runs in the fifth inning of their Wednesday win over Wayne County.  Then in their Thursday night game against Rowan County, they pushed 11 runs across the plate to turn a 5-1 advantage after five into a 17-1 victory in six innings.

Going into Friday's final day of pool play, Post 100 tops the Stars Group with a 2-0 record.  Fuquay Varina has a 2-0 record in the Stripes Group.  The Rutherford County and Port City teams are winless; the other teams are 1-1.

The top two teams from each group will play the #2 team from the other group on Saturday in the semi-finals, then the winners of those games wll play Sunday for the state championship.  If Post 100 stays atop the Stars Group, they'll play the 4 PM game Saturday.  The other semi-final game will be at 7 PM.

Friday's schedule has Cherryville playing Port City at 4 PM.  Rutherford County and Fuquay Varina play the first game Friday at 10 AM.  Wayne County and Rowan County play at 1:00, and the evening will end with Kannapolis playing Wilmingron.

All of the games at Fraley Field are being broadcast by WCSL Radio in Cherryville (1590AM, 92.3FM) and can also be heard online at

Next week will see the Mid-Atlantic Regional (August 3rd-8th) in Asheboro.

The American Legion World Series will be played August 12th through 17th at Keeter Stadium in Shelby.
