While the Lincolnton football team (American style) had a rough beginning to its season with a loss to a powerful South Point squad, the other Lincolnton 'football' team (soccer as we call it in the US; to the rest of the world, it's football) got off to a good start with a win Monday (Aug. 23rd) over East Lincoln. The score was tied at the half, but in the 65th minute, Alvaro Rodriguez scored to break the deadlock and give the Wolves a 2-1 win. For East Lincoln, it was their second loss of the season; they had lost their opener last week to Forestview by a 4-3 score.

The Mustangs lost their 3rd on Wednesday (Aug. 25th) when they traveled to Belmont and lost to South Point 3-1.

Lincolnton will host North Lincoln at 6:30 this Thursday evening. East Lincoln's next match will be Monday (Aug. 30th) when they host Forestview.

North Lincoln improved to 2-0 with a 5-1 win Monday at North Gaston. They won their first match last week at West Lincoln 3-1.

West Lincoln also lost to a very talented Lincoln Charter team on Monday 8-1. The Rebels' next match is at Cherryville next Wednesday (Sept. 1st). Senior Alex Gutierrez scored both West Lincoln's goals in the two losses.

For Lincoln Charter, in the win over West Lincoln, Jude Tremblay had two goals and two assists. Scoring single goals were Angelo Gonzalez, Ethan Walker, Zachary Salgado, Dylan Benson, and Carson Montgomery. The Eagles tied Gaston Christian in their first match last Thursday 1-1. Dylan Benson scored their only goal in that match. Lincoln Charter will travel to Graham, NC, this Saturday for a 9 AM match.

Cherryville and Maiden tied 2-2 on Monday. Jacob Sigmon and Nymeir Ramseur scored goals for the Blue Devils. Maiden won their first match over Bessemer City last week by a 6-3 score. Ramseur scored one goal in that match while sophomore Davis Higgins had five. The Blue Devils had a rematch with the Yellow Jackets Wednesday, but we didn't get a report on the score.

After losing their first match at Alexander Central last week, the Bandys Trojans have reeled off three wins: 2-0 over Challenger Academy, 4-1 over West Iredell, and 4-0 over West Rowan Wednesday.

In volleyball, Lincolnton is so far tops in the Catawba Valley 2A Conference. The Lincolnton girls are 3-1 after a 3-1 over Cherryville Tuesday. They lost the first set 28-26, then won 25-21, 25-12 and 28-26. The LHS girls lost to North Gaston 3-2 on Monday after beating Thomas Jefferson twice, both times 3-0, last week. Their next match will be at Bunker Hill on Monday.

West Lincoln will be trying for its second win at North Lincoln Thursday (Aug. 26th, 4:30 PM). West beat Cherryville 3-2 last Thursday after losing to East Lincoln 3-1 on Wednesday. East improved to 2-1 when they also beat Maiden 3-1 Tuesday. The Mustangs next match will be at Hickory on Monday (Aug 30th).

Hickory is atop the Western Foothills 3A Conference with three wins, all in non-league contests. The Red Tornadoes beat Newton-Conover 3-0 last week, then topped Bandys 3-2 and Lincoln Charter 3-1 this week.

North Lincoln is 2-1 after wins last week over Maiden and South Point, both by 3-1 scores. They lost their first match 3-0 to Bandys. Still looking for their first win after four losses, the Blue Devils will host St. Stephens at 4:30 Thursday (Aug. 26th).
