Football Updated with Schedule Changes

Wayne Howard
Staff Writer

Most football seasons Friday night games sometimes get moved up a day or postponed because of weather; this year, the problem is COVID. Since we wrote this article, some more changes have been announced.

Bunker Hill was scheduled to host North Iredell this Friday, but that game has been postponed until next Friday (Sept. 10th) at 7:30 PM. The Bears are currently 2-0 after defeating Stuart Cramer and St. Stephens in their first two games.

The Hickory at Newton-Conover game has been nixed because theRed Devils are in quarantine, so Hickory will now travel to Draughn Friday night.

The Hibriten at West Caldwell game has been postponed until Saturday night at 7:30.

South Caldwell will host the Hickory Hawks, a homeschooled team, Friday at 7:30.

Cherryville's game with Blacksburg, SC, that had been scheduled for this Friday at Rudisill Stadium, has been canceled because the South Carolina team has had cases of COVID. Meanwhile, another Gaston County team that was going to miss its Friday game because the opponents were on COVID protocol, will get to play after all. South Point's Red Raiders were supposed to play at R-S Central, but now, they'll travel to Harrisburg to play Hickory Ridge.

The Ironmen will have the week off after losing to West Lincoln last Friday. The Rebels, now 2-0, were scheduled to fight "The Battle of Hog Hill" hosting the winless Fred T. Foard Tigers--but COVID got in the way there. Now the JV teams will play at West Lincoln Thursday at 7 PM, but Foard won't play again until Septembert 17th. The Rebels varsity won't play this week, but will play at Ashbrook in Gastonia next Friday (Sept. 10th, 7:30 PM). That game next week will be broadcast by WLON Radio (1050AM, 107.5FM) and also available online at ktc.broadcasting.com.

Lincolnton will still be looking for its first victory under new coach David Byrd--but they'll be considered serious underdogs when they travel to East Lincoln. The Wolves actually got more yards both running and passing than North Lincoln last Friday night, but while they led briefly (for the first time in a long time) they ended up losing 28-18.

East Lincoln is 2-0 after impressive wins over Hibriten and Forestview. The Mustangs rushed for 213 yards in week one, but last Saturday, they had to rely on quarterback Tyler Mizell and his favorite receiver, Markell Clark. Mizell completed 13 0f his 20 passes for 224 yards, 10 of those to Clark for 174 yards and three touchdowns. Against Hibriten, he completed 12 of 17 for 153 yards, two of those to Clark for TDs. Against the Jaguars last Saturday, East got just 69 yards rushing.

North Lincoln, now 1-1 after losing at West and winning at Lincolnton, will finally get to play a home game, against a winless Northwest Cabarrus team that was beaten badly in their first two games. That game will be at 7 PM Friday.

Maiden, easy winners in their first two games, was heavily favored to add another victory at St. Stephens, but that game got canceled because of COVID.

Bunker Hill goes after its 3rd win hosting North Iredell in a game postponed until next Friday.  That is, if North Iredell is over its COvID protocol quarantine.

The Bandys Trojans have this week off. After winning their games with St. Stephens and Foard, they're scheduled to play at South Caldwell next Friday.

For the third week in a row, the Cleveland County schedule included local rivalry games: the 2-0 Burns Bulldogs hosting Kings Mtn. and Shelby hosting Crest.  COVID nixed the Crest at Shelby game.

In Gaston County, in addition to the South Point at Hickory Ridge game, Stuart Cramer will visit East Gaston, Hunter Huss hosts Central Cabarrus, North Gaston plays at Chase, Ashbrook hosts West Mecklenburg, Forestview visits Freedom, and Highland Tech hosts Winston-Salem Carver. Bessemer City plays at home against Pine Lake Prep Thursday evening at 7 PM. [UPDATE: Ashbrook and Huss games canceled due to COVID.]

LIVE STREAM
It isn't free--you have to subscribe and pay--and the quality of the live streaming is far inferior to the live streaming that Chris Ritchie did for the South Fork Conference last school year, but at least it's a way to see games you might not be able to attend. There are other streaming services who occasionally provide live streaming of some games, but the largest is NFHS Network
https://www.nfhsnetwork.com.

They'll be streamed the North Lincoln @ Northwest Cabarrus JV football game  Thursday evening (Sept. 2nd). [UPDATE: North JVs built a 19-0 halftime lead and scored a TD in each of the 3rd & 4th periods for a 39-0 win.]
