Thursday Scores & Schedule

Wayne Howard

The Lincolnton Wolves didn't look like the best 2A team in the state for much of their Thursday night home match against Forestview. For most of the game, it would be easy to say it was due to missing one of their senior center backs, Captian Zach Zigorski. Hanging on to their #1 2A state ranking put a little more pressure than this young Wolves team was ready to handle; they came out flat and had issues in their formation from the start.

The team looked lethargic from the opening whistle and at the 19-minute mark conceded an early goal. Then, perhaps motivated by trailing for the first time this season, they came to life--led by senior Kevin Calvo, Zander Harrison, Edwin Olivia, and goalkeeper Sam Carpenter, who had eight saves.

LHS eventually found their way back into the game with about 18 minutes left to play when sophmore Aaron Lail drove down the left sideline and was brought down. He was awarded a free kick right outside the box. Sophmore Jarret Trejo stepped up to take the kick and scored his 2nd goal of the season, bending his shot toward the upper near post. The Jaguars goalkeeper got a hand on the ball, but it was not enough to change the trajectory of the shot which snapped the back of the net.

After that goal, the Wolves created a half dozen good chances, but were unable to score again, and since this was a non-conference match, the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

In other Thursday matches:

West Lincoln 9, NC School for the Deaf 0
Ashbrook 3, Fred T. Foard 1
Forest Hills 3, Bunker Hill 1

Hickory improved to 5-0 with a 1-0 win over Alexander Central on Thursday. Like Lincolnton, while their American-style football team has been having a rough time, the Red Tornadoes soccer team is looking very good. Hickory is ranked as the #1 3A team in North Carolina. In five matches, they have given up only one goal, that in a 5-1 win over Newton-Conover.

Lincolnton, now 2-0-1, will play at East Lincoln (2-3) on Monday (Sept. 6th). They'll play Forestview in Gastonia on Wednesday (Sept. 8th).
After the Lincolnton match, East Lincoln will play at Lake Norman Charter on Wednesday and play at Forest Hills (Marshville) on Thursday.

North Lincoln (4-1) will host North Gaston on Tuesday, then play at South Iredell Wednesday.

Lincoln Charter will host West Lincoln on Wednesday. Cherryville will host Bandys on Tuesday, then play at Highland Tech on Thursday.

Hickory will host South Caldwell on Wednesday, thenn play at Hibriten on Thursday.
