Four West Lincoln golfers will attempt to defend their NCHSAA state title when they play in the state championship tournament at the Longleaf Club in Southern Pines Monday & Tuesday (Oct. 25th & 26th).
Back in early May, Leah Matney led the way for the Rebels with a 13-over 85, good for 18th among the individuals and Reese Coltrane tied for 20th with a 14-over 86, as did Laycee Hoffman, as West Lincoln completed a sweep of titles, taking the South Fork 2A, 2A West Regional and the 1A/2A state title. Matney and Hoffman are now at Mars Hill, so this year it's Coltrane's turn.
She, along with Brooke Beddingfield, Rae Watson and Abby Baxter will tee off Monday hoping for another championship.
Coltrane finished sixth at the 1A/2A regional Monday (Oct. 18th) at the Country Club of Salisbury. She had a double bogey on the 3rd and 5th holes, but then settled down to shoot 42 on the front nine and 37 on the back nine for a 79 stroke total. Beddingfield shot 95; Watson, 101; and Abby Baxter, 102. Hannah Baxter shot 112.
West Lincoln finished fifth at the regional tournament, 17 strokes behind winner Pine Lake Prep. Newton-Conover, which finished third at the state championship in the Spring, was just one shot behind. Hendersonville finished 3rd and Patton 4th on Monday.
Madison Logan, a Hayesville junior, and Caroline Johnson, a Pine Lake Prep sophomore, tied for medalist honors at the regional with a 73 score. Behind Coltrane, Sandra Uon of Newton-Conover tied for 7th with an 81.
Coltrane, a sophomore, set the nine-hole school record for Rebels girls with a 37 at Lincoln Country Club Oct. 5th. Her tee time for Monday is 10:30. Watson will start at 10:40. Beddingfield will tee off at 10:50 and Abby Baxter at 11:00.
