Girls Golf Championships Update

Newton-Conover, which finished third behind West Lincoln and Pine Lake Prep in the Spring NCHSAA girls 1A/2A golf championship, finished #1 Tuesday at Longleaf Club in Southern Pines. The Rebels finished in 5th place 23 strokes for the team behind the Red Devils.

Katelyn Griggs of Gray Stone Day won the individual championship with a two-round total of 153 after shooting 79 on Tuesday. Reese Coltrane of West Lincoln improved from her Monday round of 85 to 81 on Tuesday, finishing 22 over par with a 166 total, good enough for eighth place. Rae Watson, who had a 95 Monday, shot 94 on Tuesday and tied for 26th.

Coltrane started the day with a double bogey and had another on the fourth hole, but she had a birdie on the 8th and finished the day with another birdie on the 18th.

The trio of Coltrane, Watson and Beddingfield improved their combined scores by seven strokes Tuesday compared to Monday.

Abby Baxter of West Lincoln also played, but only the top three scores from each school are included in the team score.

At the 3A state tournament at Foxfire Resort, the North Lincoln team finished 10th. Adeline Todd of North shot a 97 on Tuesday to go with a 98 Monday, finishing 25 over par for the two rounds and tied for 36th place among individual golfers. Kyla Callahan of East Lincoln shot a 103 Tuesday and had a two-day total of 202, tied for 47th place. Reagann Smith of North Lincoln had a two-day total of 203. Haley Klein of North also participated.

Emily Matthews of Eastern Alamance won the individual championship wtih a 144 two-round total. The team championship was won by Fike High School from Wilson.
