3/26/2022 8:49:00 AM Gaston College Baseball Opens Sims Legion Park
Wayne Howard Reporter
Years ago, this reporter remembers seeing future major leaguers and other hopefuls who never quite made it there play at Gastonia's Sims Legion Park. Until last year, the park was home to Gastonia's minor league baseball team, the "Grizzlies." Now, the CaroMont Health Park is home to a newer minor league outfit, the "Honey Hunters."
The old park on N. Martin Luther King, Jr. Way (previously Marietta Street) that was used for high school and American Legion baseball is becoming the home for the Gaston College baseball team, the "Rhinos." Not too long ago, competitive athletics wasn't a part of Gaston College's offerings, but that, too, has changed.
The renovated facility will have a ribbon cutting Saturday (March 26th) at 2 PM. Admission to the game is free and food trucks will be on hand. You can also meet (and get a photo with) the Rhinos mascot.
We try hard to keep up with high school sports and to recognize the student athletes from local schools. We don't attempt to provide info on professional sports (NFL, MLB, NBA, etc.) or college sports. Most of that info is readily available from other sources. If there's something you'd like to see us cover (or cover better) let us know. We depend on coaches, players, parents and other fans to keep us informed about their teams.
The Lincoln Herald has been providing local news, information about community events, sports scores, the obituaries, and more--for FREE--since 2012.
