Local high school tennis teams had mixed results in round one of the NCHSAA dual team championships. Lincolnton lost for the first time this year while Lincoln Charter won and advanced to round two.
Zach Zagortski lost for the first time in singles play, but he and Piero Rovalino won their doubles match. Rovalino also won in singles play as did Zander Harrison and Jose Ramirez. Rovalino won 6-2, 6-0; while Harrison had to recover from a 1-6 first set to win the second 6-4. He then took the tiebreaker game. Ramirez won 6-3, 6-3.
The 5-4 win by East Surry ends the Wolves' season.
Lincoln Charter won its match with West Stanly. Ryan Hughes lost one game in the second set but won 6-0, 6-1; while Jacob Reis lost two games in his first set and Connor Milligan, Ben Shelton and Grayson Upchuch each lost one first set game, but they all prevailed with 6-0 wins in the second set. Noah Cochran took both of his sets 6-0.
As of late morning Thursday (April 28th) we had not received any report on the Bandys vs West Stokes match. Lincoln Charter will play the winner on Tuesday (May 3rd).
Cherryville lost in the 1A playoffs, 9-0 to Bishop McGuiness.
We did not receive any report on the Foard vs Hickory 3A match.
While team play for LHS is over, Zagortski and Rovalino will compete in doubles championships and Harrison in singles in the Individual Championships this Friday and Saturday.
