Eastern Catawba Cooperative Christian Ministry
Press Release

NEWTON, N.C. - Eastern Catawba Cooperative Christian Ministry, Inc. 22nd Annual Benefit Golf Tournament took place on Thursday, May 12, at the Glen Oaks Golf Club in Maiden. The day began with a BBQ luncheon compliments of the First United Methodist Church Men’s Group in Conover. We are so grateful to this group of men who continue to honor what has become a tradition.

Board member Denny Schell took a moment before the shotgun start to remember our dear friend and board member, Gussy Warren who passed away in early March. Gussy’s husband, Dexter, was at the tournament and gave a donation in Gussy’s memory. Denny closed with prayer and then the tournament play began.

This year our winning church team hails from St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Newton, for the second year in a row! Golfers include Garry Rufty, Becky Schell, Mike Tripoli, and Ransom Graham. Our open team division winners are Steven Hoyle, Dewey Grant, Chris Carver, and Doyle Wyant. Congratulations to our tournament team champs!

Winners for the longest drive include Doyle Wyant for the men’s contest and Becky Schell for the women’s. Grabbing the win for the closest to the pin contest we have Nelson Detter for hole 5, Nate Chapman for hole 8, Mark Mahaffey for hole 12, and Pete Lail for hole 14.

As well as offering our congratulations, we want to thank everyone who partnered with us in this tournament. From those who worked hard to pull this together, to each sponsor, supporter, and player, we thank you for your willingness to make a difference in the lives of those in need within our community. Thank you!
