The Cherryville Post 100 American Legion baseball team managed only four hits off Gaston Braves (posts 144-266) pitchers for the second night in a row and fell behind two games to none in the best of seven Area IV semifinal series Friday night at South Point High School in Belmont.
Both teams were putting runners on base--but leaving them there. The first two Post 100 batters reached, one hit by a pitch and the other on a single, but three straight outs ended their chance in the first inning. They put another on in the top of the second, but he never advanced.
In the third, they got runners on the corners, and that set up what technically was a 'double steal.' Joseph Webb took off for second, and drew a throw from the catcher. He eventually got tagged out, and it was the third out of the inning...but it took long enough that Landon Hahn was able to score from third to give Cherryville a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the third, the Braves got a runner all the way to third base, but still failed to score.
Post 100 pitcher Zane Brockman, like Parker Agosta for the Braves, was sailing along through five innings, allowing only one hit going into the bottom of the sixth. That's when a solo homer to center field by Caleb Burr tied the game. Three batters later, a two-run shot by a pinch hitter gave the Braves a 3-1 lead.
Pinch hitter Cole Irby's pinch hit single scored a run, but he was thrown out trying to make it a double and Post 100 could score no more--the final 3-1.
The third game in the series is scheduled for 7 PM Saturday (July 16th) at Fraley Field in Cherryville.
