Post 100 Wins Area IV Championship

Wayne Howard
Reporter

Cherryville Post 100 won a Friday night game over the Queen City Mustangs to claim the Area IV championship of American Legion baseball.

Post 100 scored the first run in the second inning when Joseph Webb scored; then neither team scored until the top of the fourth when Queen City got singles from the first two batters, loaded the bases on a base on balls, then tied the game on an infield single. That was followed by a bunt and a bad throw to the plate went wide and another run scored to make it 2-1. Another single scored two more runs and it was 4-1.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Mustangs pitcher hit three batters with pitches. The catcher then got called for interference scoring a run to make it 4-2. A passed ball allowed another Post 100 run and made it 4-3.

In the fifth inning, Webb started things off with a double; Jacob Hamrick then struck out, but the ball was dropped by the catcher and his throw to first hit Hamrick in the head. Hamrick stole second and on the catcher's throw to get him, Webb scored to tie the game at 4-all.

In the bottom of the sixth, Post 100 scored another to take the lead 5-4. Cherryville fans thought another runner was safe at the plate but the umpire called him out.

In the seventh inning, Zane Brockman, who had allowed only two hits, no runs, and didn't walk a batter since coming on in relief, had his 5th, 6th and 7th strikeouts to close out the Post 100 win 4-3.

For Cherryville, this was their 20th Area IV championship, third straight , and 4th in the last five years. Both teams now advance to the state tournament at Campbell University beginning next Tuesday.
