Last week in this cyberspace, I blasted the ACC for its paltry 0-3 showing against the Big Least (formerly the Big East) Conference.
Well, I have to admit that Florida State helped the league’s reputation a little with a win over Clemson in Tallahassee, and now the Seminoles are at least in the conversation for the BCS title chase.
But let us not get carried away. FSU lit up the scoreboard against a Clemson team that is ranked 95th in the country in total defense. And this is after the Tigers lured Brent Venables away from Oklahoma with a salary package that is obscene by defensive coordinator standards. So far, Venables is not coming close to earning his reported $800,000 annual salary.
On the high school level, someone who is definitely earning his keep is East Lincoln coach Mike Byus, whose Mustangs hold the No. 2 ranking in the Associated Press state 2A football poll. Tonight, East Lincoln plays Lincolnton in the annual rivalry game. More on that one below.
Now this week’s crystal ball gazing:
West Lincoln at Cherryville: Too close to call? West Lincoln should be able to run the ball against the Ironmen, but then again, the Ironmen have a little speed merchant in QB Darius Harris … Cherryville 27-21.
Lincolnton at East Lincoln: Mustangs looked a little flat in the first half last week at North Lincoln. Perhaps they were looking ahead to the Lincolnton game … East Lincoln 42, Lincolnton 20.
Bessemer City at Lake Norman Charter: If East Lincoln QB Garrett Young is the league MVP, Knights tight end/running back/quarterback/all everything Alex Scearce is a close second. This kid can play … Lake Norman Charter 49-6.
North Lincoln at Highland Tech: Got to give the Knights credit for holding East Lincoln to seven first half points last week. Here, they notch their first win of the year … North Lincoln 35-12.
South Point at Ashbrook: The Green Wave has found an offense this season, but South Point will outscore the home team … South Point 42-22.
North Gaston at Forestview: North Gaston’s brutal early season schedule has worn on the Wildcats and eroded their confidence. There are signs of a major letdown … Forestview 54-12.
Kings Mountain at Hunter Huss: You never know about these Huskies. They started out strong last year too only to slip badly. Looks like déjà vu … Kings Mountain 30-24.
Maiden at South Iredell: This game could decide the CVAC title. Vikings have too much speed even for a good defense like Maiden’s … South Iredell 28-13.
Middle Tennessee at Georgia Tech: Jackets need a breather to get over the harsh truth that they blew it last week against Miami … Georgia Tech 48-10.
N.C. State at Miami: The Hurricanes have actually played pretty well after that early blowout loss at Kansas State … Miami 37-21.
Duke at Wake Forest: This is a game Duke could win, but somehow I get the feeling the Blue Devils will not get it done again … Wake Forest 30-28.
Clemson at Boston College: Tigers can score plenty; they just cannot stop anybody … Clemson 35-20.
Idaho at North Carolina: Truly a “meat and potatoes” game for the Tar Heels … North Carolina 45-17.
Louisiana Tech at Virginia: College upset special. Tech is the best team nobody cares anything about … La. Tech 24-20.
Virginia Tech at Cincinnati: The Hokies struggle to contain the run, and the Bearcats run it well. Another Big East flop for VTech … Cincinnati 31-21.
Florida State at South Florida: This is the Seminoles’ first road test, but they should win it … Florida State 40-14.
Ole Miss at Alabama: Ole Miss’ 3-1 record is somewhat misleading … Alabama 35-3.
Oregon at Washington State: Wonder what outrageous uniform the Ducks will wear in this conference game at Pullman … Oregon 49-20.
Tennessee at Georgia: Vols coach Derek Dooley could be in trouble if UT gets pounded between the hedges … Georgia 38-24.
South Carolina at Kentucky: Gamecocks have shaky history on the road in the SEC, so they need to be on upset alert … South Carolina 27-17.
Ohio State at Michigan State: This game lost some luster when Sparty lost to Notre Dame … Ohio State 24-20.
Texas at Oklahoma State: Longhorns are on the rebound after two straight losing seasons in Big 12 play … Texas 20-13.
Last week’s record: 15-5. The season to date: 58-14.
