SHELBY, N.C. - A defensive game.  Just like the quote from the coach in one of my favorite movies, Love & Basketball, "Offense sales tickets, defense wins games."  That was the story of the showdown between Shelby and Lincolnton.

The Lincolnton Middle School boys basketball team traveled to Shelby Wednesday, February 20 to play for the championship title.

Shelby's team had an undefeated regular season and the Wildcats were hoping to give them their first loss.

The first quarter was tight with the Wildcats leading the way 7-6.  This quickly changed in the second quarter when Shelby had an explosive 22 points compared to Lincolnton's 9.  After the half the defense showed up again holding Shelby to only 4 points in the third quarter.  The Wildcats were within 8 points and the fans were hopeful again.  It was a packed house with zealous fans.  The Wildcats just couldn't close the gap offensively in the fourth quarter.  A combination of turn-overs, fouls, missed shots and Shelby's ball movement resulted in their 29-46 loss.

Shelby's head coach, Lawrence, has been with the program for 21 years and credited his win to the defensive plays of his team.  He said "I knew they had guards who can shoot and we just had to keep them from shooting."  This was true as the Wildcats just came from putting up 73 points in their playoff game.  The Shelby defense held all of the Wildcat players to single digits.

Congratulations to both for wonderful seasons.  Shelby 14-0 and Lincolnton 12-2 Making it to the championship is a great accomplishment.  I sure am proud to wear my black and gold!!
