The Mtn. Island Charter Raptors played another short softball game on Friday. The three-and-a-half inning affair was another blowout over an opponent, this time, Queen's Grant from Matthews.
We don't attempt to keep up with all of the high school sports in our service area; it's a big enough job to get the scores and keep up with the schedule for teams in Lincoln County, Maiden & Cherryville. In the fall, we do try to keep up with football--it's the biggest of the high school sports. But in the Spring, keeping up with baseball, softball, girls soccer, tennis, golf and track is a bit much--so we do what we can with the help of reports from coaches, players and fans.
We received a bunch of photos from Mtn. Island Charter's win on Friday from Bill Ward ("Mr. Bill) who does photos for us on many events in Gaston County, so while we're not likely to keep up with all the scores from the PAC 7 1A Conference that includes teams from Mecklenburg, Iredell and Union counties, we're posting the photos from Bill and saying congrats to the MIC team on their latest victory.
Sophomore Chloe Hatzopoulos had two home runs and two stolen bases in the win. Freshman Kaylan Brown also homered. Junior Lauren Engel and freshman Camden Garland combined for the pitching shutout in the easy 18-0 win in which Mtn. Island Charter scored 14 runs in the first inning.
Since an opening game 4-3 loss at Cuthbertson in Monroe, the Raptors have only needed to go a full seven innings once--their 2-1 win over Hough in Cornelius last Wednesday.
Their toughest test in their conference will likely come next Tuesday (April 2nd) when they host Mooresville's Pine Lake Prep--so far unbeaten this season. Before that, they have games Wednesday at Highland Tech in Gastonia and Friday when they play Carolina International from Concord at Hill's Chapel Church on highway 16-business in eastern Lincoln County.
