MOUNT HOLLY, N.C. - The Mountain Island Charter varsity softball team won Friday’s home conference game against Carolina International School of Concord by a score of 10-0.

Lawson Gerland is the ace catcher for the Mountain Island Lady Raptors in her sophomore year of high school. After taking a few pictures of her shaking hands with the umpires, which I thought was pretty cool, I asked her mom the backstory on this and this is what she said:

“It goes back years. Lawson has been going to Jen Schro Catching camps, clinics, and retreats all over the country for about five years now.  One of the first and most important things Jen teaches her catchers is to look the umpire in the eye, shake his/her hand, and  introduce herself. They will practice it. The catcher's number one job is to make their pitcher look good, job number two is to build a good relationship with the umpire. It helps her whole team. For a 10 or 11-year-old girl it can be intimidating shaking an adult's hand and introducing yourself, but she has been doing it almost every game she's played since then.”

Jen Schroeder (Schro) was a catcher at UCLA. Now she runs a softball facility in Anaheim, Calif.
