DENVER, N.C.––Gabriela Vatrano gets a kick out of soccer.

Vatrano, 13, is making quite a name for herself on local soccer fields. According to her proud dad, Tony Vatrano of Denver, young Gabby is a remarkable athlete. She is heading to a national soccer tournament concurrent with the World Cup. Hers is the only girls team in the state that will be competing for a youth soccer national title.

A rising eighth grader at Mill Creek Middle School in Claremont, Miss Vatrano played club soccer for the Lake Norman Soccer Club in Mooresville for several years before moving to the larger Charlotte Soccer Academy. She played up an age group at Lake Norman, as Mr. Vatrano revealed.

“She led Mill Creek Middle School to its best soccer season ever,” he said, “and she as a standout at many positions, including leading the team in scoring and assists.”

Miss Vatrano will begin the upcoming 2019-20 soccer season playing in the girls’ category for those under 14 years of age at the Charlotte Soccer Academy, as her father continued.

“Gabby is the only player on the team from Denver and/or Catawba County,” he added. “The current team just finished a regular season playing in the highest league offered by a state-sponsored club soccer, the U.S. Youth National League-Piedmont Conference, for which club teams must qualify for the year prior.”

The current team recently finished season play with a perfect 11-0 record.

  • The current team is still playing soccer and has just won the USYS Southern Regional Championship in Baton Rouge, La.  There were 16 teams in the field representing 11 southern states.
