DENVER, N.C.––Countless soccer fans the world over just watched America win its second consecutive Women’s World Cup.

And one of them was Gabriela Vatrano of Denver. We introduced you to Vatrano last week, only here in The Herald. The 13-year-old athlete is a budding soccer star and stellar standout at the Charlotte Soccer Academy, playing in the upcoming 2019-20 season in the girls’ category for those under 14 years of age. She is also a rising eighth grader at Mill Creek Middle School in Claremont, according to her proud father, Tony Vatrano.

“I have made a lot of friends playing soccer,” Miss Vatrano told The Herald on Monday. “I chose to play middle school this year, so I could play with my friends from school. I travel to lots of different places to play games. Sometimes I go straight from school to the Charlotte Soccer Academy.”

On Sunday in France, the American women’s team beat their Dutch counterparts in a thrilling match. The American victory of two to nothing was seen by people all over the globe.

Vatrano was among those glued to the game, watching every move made by Megan Rapinoe and company. Vatrano had nothing but words of praise for the American stars.

“I liked watching the World Cup,” she said, “because all the players are so good!”
