The American Legion baseball team from Randolph County Post #45 had a reputation for coming back to win. They did it on Sunday (August 11th) to take the Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament championship by winning not one--but two games--over a Vienna, Virginia squad who hadn't lost in the tournament until Sunday.
After falling behind Union County in the state tournament at Cherryville the last week in July 3-0, they came back to win that game 7-3. Eventually, they lost to Fuquay-Varina in the semi-finals of that tourney, but they were the host team for the regionals at Asheboro.
Post #45 lost to Vienna, Virginia, Post #180 on Thursday (August 8th) by a 6-2 score. Playing from the losers bracket, they had to beat that team twice on Sunday and they did. Randolph County took the first game 3-0, then held off the Virginia squad by a 3-2 score to take the regional championship. Now for the third year in a row, they'll play in the American Legion Baseball World Series at Shelby beginning Thursday.
The first game in the World Series at Veterans Field (Keeter Stadium) in Shelby will be Thursday morning at 10 AM. Thursday is Senior Citizens Day. Those 55 or older can get a free ticket at the ticket office.
