DENVER, N.C. – If you follow tennis and like to see great levels being played you don’t have to go far. Willie Dann, the owner of The Club at Westport in Denver - along with his wife Robin, has put together a team that is making national news. Dann is also a member of the men’s team.
The team, a men’s 40-and-over adult tennis team, won the state title in June, won the Southern sectional title in Alabama in July and will now represent North Carolina and the South in the national championships, held Oct. 25-27 in Orlando at the U.S. Tennis Association’s 100-court national campus.
During the Southern sectional championships in Mobile, Ala. the Westport team won five consecutive matches to triumph over teams from eight other Southern states, beating a squad from Louisiana in the final.
Playing in the highest men’s division – the 4.5-plus division - the Westport team captained by Kane Haynes is now 19-0 on the season. The Westport team has won two consecutive state titles but came up just short of winning the Southern championship in 2018, finishing second. It now hopes to win a national championship in 2019.
While there are 900,000 USTA members playing league tennis every year, less than one percent of that number advance to the national championships.
