For the third match in a row, East Lincoln senior Chase Gilley scored three goals Wednesday as the Mustangs improved their unbeaten record to 18-0, 10-0 in the South Fork Conference.

For a change, the Mustangs had a close match as the North Lincoln Knights (10-7-2 overall, 5-5 in the conference) scored four goals in the 5-4 East Lincoln win.

The Knights actually led 2-1 in the first half but the Mustangs tied the score before the break, then posted three fairly quick goals in the second half for a 5-3 edge before North got another goal to cut the final margin to 5-4.

Mustangs goaltender William White didn't get another shutout, but he fended off North Lincoln shots with 8 saves.

Senior Nathan Brown scored two of the Knights' goals.

Chase Gilley now has 45 goals this season and 20 assists. Twin brother Logan has 33 goals and 17 assists. The duo has signed to play at Appalachian State next year. Chase ranks 8th nationally in points and 11th in goals among all high school players. Logan ranks 38th in points & 49th in goals. Pearson Cunningham has 12 goals and 22 assists and William White, the goalkeeper, has allowed only 20 goals and is credited for 110 saves. He's had six shutouts.

The Mustangs will next play at home against Bandys (6-11, 4-6) on Monday evening (Oct. 21st) at 6:30. They'll host Maiden (4-12, 2-8) next Wednesday (Oct. 21st) at 6 PM.

Newton-Conover (14-2-1, 9-1), last year's South Fork champions, still holds second place in the conference--their only conference loss to East. The Mustangs & Red Devils meet again October 30th at East Lincoln in the final regular season match.

After losing to East on Monday, the Lincolnton soccer team (10-5, 6-4), the third place team in the league, beat Bandys 3-1 Wednesday. They'll host West Lincoln (4-12-1, 0-10) on Monday at 6 PM. West lost to Newton-Conover 5-1 on Wednesday.

North Lincoln will play at Maiden (4-12, 2-8) Monday in a 5 PM match. The Blue Devils lost to Lake Norman Charter 5-0 Wednesday.

the latest news every day--

Not having access to the internet in 2019 is like not having a radio in the 1940s or a tv in the 1960s.  Internet news sources now reach more people every day than watch television to get their local news.  According to a 2018 survey of US adults, almost half (47%) of adults get news at least sometimes from a social media site. That exceeds the 41% who read newspapers in print. TV and print actually lost ground from a similar survey conducted in 2016, while digital made advances in preference since then.
