11/13/2019 8:59:00 PM East Lincoln Whips Newton-Conover Mustangs perfect season continues with 7-1 win
Wayne Howard Staff Writer
The first time East Lincoln played Newton-Conover, they scored three first half goals and won the match 4-0. The second time, the last match of the regular season played at East Lincoln High School, was a double overtime victory by a 2-1 score. The Red Devils had hoped the third time might be the charm...but the Mustangs star players, Logan & Chase Gilley, had other ideas.
Like the first meeting it was a big first half that propelled East Lincoln to victory--but this time they poured it on--scoring six goals in the first half and cruising to a 7-1 win, their 25th without a loss.
The Mustangs scored their first goal just five minutes into the contest, then added another less than five minutes later and a third in only a minute more. They scored three goals near the end of the first half to push to a 6-0 halftime advantage. Newton-Conover managed only one goal in the second half while East Lincoln scored another for the final 7-1 score. All seven goals were scored by the Gilleys--Logan had four and Chase the other three, but credit for their super performance also belongs to teammates Luke Felts who had two assists and Noah Graden, Landon Graden and Luke Swanson, each of whom had one.
In the net, William White allowed only the one goal and had seven saves in his 75 minutes of play before being relieved by Jonathan Nauman.
The Mustangs will play at home again on Saturday when they'll host Shelby, a 3-1 winner over North Forsyth. The Golden Lions are also unbeaten--but they did have two ties this year, one against Forestview and the other against North Lincoln.
