Press Release

LINCOLNTON, N.C. - North Lincoln High School was awarded an $85,000 grant from the Timken Foundation of Canton in support of a school/community effort to build strong men’s and women’s soccer programs for North Lincoln and the feeder area. The grant is specifically for lighting the high school soccer field. Mr. Marty Hallman, Plant Manager at the Timken Lincolnton Bearing Plant, presented the check from the Timken Foundation to Chip Cathey, principal of North Lincoln High School on October 20 at the high school.

Over the last six months, the high school has worked with parents and leadership from Denver United FC and North Lincoln’s soccer program to create a shared vision and a cohesive plan to build a quality soccer program for youth of all ages in the school’s feeder area and beyond. The plan involves converting the playing field into a lighted facility with a 3 ½ season playing surface, and then working in additional phases to add an all-weather training field and other enhancements such as storage and player protection structures. By partnering with soccer parents, the local soccer club and the community, the goal is to give players a continuous pathway for development at all ages and skill levels and provide critical space at the high school to enable growth.

By having access to a lighted soccer field, school and club teams will have expanded practice and game time options, and transitioning the field to almost year-round use will improve field conditions for both men’s and women’s seasons and enable local year-round soccer programs to exist. We are confident these improvements will help significantly grow soccer in the North Lincoln High School area.

A community steering committee of soccer parents is currently working to develop a fund-raising plan to complete this important initiative with a phased in approach. We welcome involvement from the community to help make this vision a reality. If you would like to support the project, contact Chip Cathey at North Lincoln High School.
