Avery added “Mr. Navey was instrumental in the development and construction of the new press box, which serves as the crown jewel for our football stadium, and will now be named in his honor.” Navey began coaching football at West Lincoln High School in 1978, then transitioned to the head wrestling coach position at West Lincoln Middle School in 1996, where he continues in that role today. He has led teams to 18 conference titles in 24 seasons at the middle school, the remaining 6 seasons the teams came in second place. Navey was named West Lincoln High School’s Athletic Director in 2001, a role that he held until his retirement. As Athletic Director, he promoted numerous additions and upgrades to the school’s athletic facilities.
Board Member Cathy Davis said she was “honored to be asked to serve on the committee. The community will be very happy with this decision.” Davis, along with Dr. Nathan McLean, WLHS principal, David Avery, Athletic Director, Sheriff Bill Beam, Tra Water, NCHSAA Deputy Commissioner, and other WLHS teachers and students worked together to formulate a proposal for the official re-naming.
Dr. Nathan McLean said, “Butch Ross and Wayne Navey have had the opportunity to positively impact countless student-athletes and were vitally important to the success our athletic programs continue to experience today. Even in their retirements they continue to be heavily involved in fundraising for WLHS and continue to serve as ambassadors to the athletic program. The naming of the old gym and the press box is well deserved and will continue to honor these two individuals for the countless hours spent serving the community of West Lincoln.”
