LINCOLNTON, N.C. - Middle school cross country teams concluded their season on Mon. Nov. 16 with a county conference meet hosted at West Lincoln Middle School. Although, it was a very short and different season the athletes enjoyed their time and were thankful to participate.

The Panthers of North Lincoln took the team title in both the girls and boys division. (All results and times posted below)

Kiki Putnam led the way for the girls finishing the course in 15:28 with her closest opponent 40 seconds behind. However, the rest of the girls closing out the top 10 were all very close together starting with Riley Melton (NL) followed by McKenzie Benfield (EL), Katelyn Grass (EL), Sienna Rush (NL), Gracie Bilmanis (NL), Caylee Hollar (NL), Elan Eurey (NL), Blythe Jaworsky (NL) and Lila Furner (EL).

For the boys it was a race for 1st and to the finish. Joshua Olvera passed several runners throughout the course and finished strong with East Lincoln's Brayden Miller hot on his trail. He captured 1st place for Lincolnton Middle school boys' team with a finishing time of 13:34.

After the top 2 finishers it was a pack of Panthers taking places 3-6 (Brady Rinkus, Kaden Howard, Juan Tinajero and Logan Richardson). Gavin Hearberlin (EL), Anderson Wise (W), Beckett Rinkus (NL), Eli Sipe (NL), and Eli Rush (NL) closed out places 7-11. East Lincoln and Lincolnton's runners battled hard for 2nd place overall. It was Lincolnton's Bley Phillips (12th), Dominic Sanchez (15th) and then another pack of wildcats, Allen Rydell, Parker Mathis, Hayes Kiser and Jason Rosales (17-20) that sealed the 2nd place title for the Wildcats. Kaleb Hunt was the only other Falcon to place in the top 20. Kenan Stewart placed 16th for West.

Many of these runners aren't "runners" they are athletes missing their regular fall seasons but they showed dedication, hard-work and pride for their school. Like one of my favorite movies, Forest Gump, I hope these athletes feel the same as he did, "For no particular reason, I just kept going...I just felt like running."

My favorite overall experience with cross country this season was watching these kids encourage one another. They cheered for other teams, they pushed their teammates. They were literally running beside one another, "keep up, come on, push, you can do it." This is what sports are really about. Building one another up and building relationships.

Kuddos to all of the runners and a big thank you to parents, grandparents & friends for their support. There was always a great turnout at each meet.
