The Lincolnton girls soccer team ran into a buzz saw in their game Monday afternoon. Coach Brad Bagan is trying to build the soccer programs at LHS. He did well enough with the boys to be named the Coach of the Year for this year in the South Fork Conference. On Monday afternoon (March 29th) his team ran into a competitor that was just too good. Lake Norman Charter's girls team is unbeaten. They've scored 40 goals in five games. Against the LHS girls on Monday, they hit their average--8 goals. Defensively, they've allowed only two goals all season. They held Lincolnton scoreless in an 8-0 win. On Wednesday (5 PM), the she-Wolves will play a game in which they have a real chance. They'll play at North Lincoln. North Lincoln beat Newton-Conover Monday 3-2.
East Lincoln improved to 4-1 with a 3-2 win over Maiden Monday. Cambell Vander Harr, Abbie Hege, and Hannah Casey scored goals for the Mustangs. East will host West under the lights Tuesday evening at 7 PM. The Rebels will still be looking for their first win. On Monday, they fell to Bandys 11-3. Maiden will host Newton-Conover at 5 PM Tuesday.
In the Southern Piedmont 1A Conference, the Cherryville girls lost for the fourth time, 10-0 to Thomas Jefferson on Monday. The Lincoln Charter girls next match will be against the only team to beat them so far this season. They'll play at Thomas Jefferson next Tuesday (April 6th).
In boys tennis, North Lincoln improved to 4-0 with a 5-4 win over Bandys.
Riley Carroll, Collin Bonner andNikola Hissom won singles matches while Bisson teamed with Ronald Mason Rudd and Carroll & John Alex Carver won doubles matches. North will host West Lincoln at 4 PM Tuesday.
West lost to Lake Norman Charter 9-0 on Monday.
The Maiden tennis team beat Lincolnton 6-3 Monday. Aaron Harris had to go to tiebreakers to win two sets over his LHS opponent, but he prevailed with 7-5 sets. It was even tougher for Greyson Eneix, who won his first set 6-3, lost the second 3-6, and then prevailed 10-8 in the third. William Eneix and Cooper Houser also won singles sets for the Blue Devils, and Harris & William Eneix took one of the doubles matches for the win. We'd love to tell you about the LHS winners, but neither we nor other sports outlets received any information from Lincolnton. Lincolnton will play at Newton-Conover at 4 PM Tuesday; Maiden, now 2-0, will play again next Monday afternoon at home against West Lincoln.
We didn't get a report so far on Monday's Newton-Conover at East Lincoln match. West lost to Lake Norman Charter 9-0. Bandys will host Lake Norman Charter Tuesday.
Lincoln Charter's boys lost to Hough 9-0 Monday. The Eagles will play at Highland Tech on Tuesday (4 PM).
In case you're wondering, girls tennis doesn't start until late in April. That's also when baseball and track begin.
In softball, the Maiden girls pulled into a tie with West Lincoln and Bandys for second place in the South Fork with a 4-3 win Monday afternoon. The home team scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take the lead, then held off the Rebels in the 7th. It was essentially a pitchers' duel, as West gave up only seven hits and Harlie Burton walked just two batters; the Rebels only had six hits and two bases on balls. Maiden did have one home run, but the Blue Devils didn't provide any info, so we can't tell you more. West Lincoln will play at Newton-Conover at 4 PM Tuesday; Maiden will play at Lake Norman Charter (also at 4 PM).
Bandys didn't play Monday. After splitting games with Newton-Conover last week, winning 9-4 Thursday after losing 5-4 on Tuesday, the Trojans will host winless Lincolnton Tuesday evening at 6. Lincolnton also didn't play Monday. Neither did East Lincoln, at 3-0, the #1 team so far in the league , nor North Lincoln. The Mustangs and Knights will play at 6 PM Tuesday at East Lincoln.
Lincoln Charter scored in every inning winning a six-inning game with Highland Tech 13-1 Monday.
In golf, the West Lincoln girls have placed first in three conference matches so far; Newton-Conover has placed first in two. The Red Devils, East Lincoln, Maiden and North Lincoln were scheduled to compete in a 9-hole match Monday (March 29th) at Verdict Ridge in eastern Lincoln County. We haven't received a report on that match so far. The East Lincoln and Lake Norman Charter boys teams have both been first in one of their matches to top the league on the boys side.
